South Darfur: Protests in Kass Following Release of Militiamen, Four Killed

Protests erupted in Kass locality following the decision of the Prosecution to release the four militiamen detained in the previous days following an outbreak of fighting in the Burunga area.

Demonstrators attacked and set fire to a number of security and judicial buildings, including the Prosecutor’s Office and the Police Station. The demonstrators also vandalised four police vehicles before destroying the Weapon Depot and plundering the local treasury.

Other protestors targeted the prison where they released convicted offenders before burning the Criminal Records Office and other security offices. This resulted in the death of four civilians and the wounding of others. In one account a criminal released from prison stole a sniper rifle before fleeing.
