South Darfur: Police Officer and Civilians Injured in Ambush

On July 31, 2020, a gunfight erupted in the Burunga area – situated 35km from Kass locality – between long-standing residents and new arrivals over land ownership. Following pleas from representatives the local authorities deployed a force to investigate the situation.

On arrival to the area the force requested a local resident guide them to the scene of the incident; where they were then ambushed resulting in the injury of a police officer and four civilians. The injured persons were taken to Kass Teaching Hospital for treatment.

This incident prompted the widespread displacement of civilians in the area who fled to Kass locality for protection. The displaced persons proceeded to stage a sit-in inside a building within the locality demanding justice and security.

At the same time fighting continued between the police and militias in the area resulting in the arrest of four militiamen.
