North Darfur: Armed Movements Fighting Over Control of Area Rich with Gold

Fierce fighting has taken place in the Tora Jameh area, located to the north-east of Jebel Marra. The fighting erupted as the Sudan Liberation Army – Abdel Wahid faction (SLA-AW) led by “Qaddoura” attacked the forces of Al-Sadig Fakah, which have traditionally controlled the area.

“Fakah” was previously one of the most prominent leaders of the SLA-AW, yet he split from the armed movement and signed a peace agreement with the Government of North Darfur in January 2017 under the name of the Sudan Liberation Movement for Peace and Development (SLM-PD).

The Tora Jameh area is rich in gold and hosts a gold mine. Civilians have criticised the armed movements for prioritising personal finances and status over their well-being.
